Electroplay

High-risk practicesAlso known as: electrostimulation, e-stim, electrical play

Electroplay uses mild electrical stimulation for erotic purposes. Only devices made for it, never above the waist: a practice to approach with caution.

Electroplay means using weak electrical currents to create sensations on the skin: a tingling, a light prick, an involuntary muscle contraction. Specific tools are used, from wands that produce small sparks to stimulators with adhesive or conductive electrodes.

Why people enjoy it

Electrical sensations are unlike any other: unpredictable, prickly or buzzing, sometimes almost ticklish. The person receiving them can’t control how their muscles react, and this creates a strong sense of surrender. The person controlling them holds an intensity that can be adjusted with great precision.

Safety

Electricity travels through the body along paths you can’t see, and some mistakes can have serious consequences. The basic rules have no exceptions:

  • use only devices designed and sold for erotic use, battery-powered and with adjustable intensity;
  • never home-made or modified devices, or ones designed for other purposes, and nothing that plugs into the mains;
  • never above the waist, and never in a way that sends current through the chest or from one side of the body to the other;
  • never on the neck, head or face, or near the heart;
  • never with people who have a pacemaker or other implanted devices, heart problems or epilepsy, or who are pregnant;
  • no water, metal or wet skin unless the tool is designed for it, and no alcohol or drugs;
  • always start at the lowest intensity and increase slowly, asking for feedback.

Consent

Talk beforehand about health history and areas to avoid, and choose a safeword that gets the device switched off immediately. Learning from experienced people, at a workshop or a club, is the best way to start.

Palpitations, fainting, chest pain or difficulty breathing: switch off immediately and call 112. Burns or redness that don’t go away should be seen by a doctor.
