Impact play

PracticesAlso known as: spanking, spankings, striking

Impact play covers practices based on controlled strikes, from spanking with the hand to riding crops and paddles, always on safe areas and with consent.

Impact play covers all practices in which the partner’s body is struck in a controlled, consensual way. The best-known form is spanking, but paddles, riding crops, many-tailed floggers and other tools are also used. Intensity ranges from a playful pat to decidedly strong sensations.

How it’s practised, in general

Always start gently, with light strikes that warm up the skin, and increase gradually. Suitable areas are the fleshy, muscular ones, in particular the buttocks and upper thighs. Different tools give different sensations: a broad, thuddy blow isn’t the same as a thin, stinging one.

Why people enjoy it

The rhythm of the strikes, the warmth of the skin and the tension of waiting can create a state of deep focus, sometimes even subspace. For many it’s also a discipline game: spanking as a symbolic “punishment” within a D/s dynamic.

Safety and consent

  • Never strike the head, neck, spine, kidneys, joints or stomach.
  • Try tools on yourself before using them on someone else.
  • Talk beforehand about visible marks: some people can’t afford bruises.
  • Check in frequently: the “traffic light” system with green, amber and red works very well.
  • No alcohol or drugs, which alter both strength and the perception of pain.

After the scene, aftercare: water, a soothing cream on the skin, cuddles if welcome.

Very extensive bruising, increasing swelling, blood in the urine or pain that doesn’t go away are signs not to ignore: see a doctor.
