Subspace

FundamentalsAlso known as: sub space, sub headspace, topspace, drop

Subspace is the trance-like, light-headed state that a submissive can reach during an intense scene: it should be recognised and protected.

Subspace is the name the BDSM community uses for a particular mental state that the submissive can reach during an intense scene. Those who experience it describe it as a kind of trance: time stretches, pain is transformed, thoughts drift far away and only the present remains.

Where it comes from

There’s no single explanation, but the release of endorphins and adrenaline, deep focus and the sense of surrender all contribute. It can come with impact play, bondage, mind games or simply a very immersive atmosphere. There’s also an equivalent for the dominant, sometimes called topspace: a state of great focus and energy.

Why people enjoy it

For many it’s one of the most beautiful moments in BDSM: a feeling of peace, lightness and connection with the partner that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Safety

Precisely because it’s an altered state, subspace calls for attention from the person leading:

  • someone in subspace may not notice pain or be unable to use the safeword: the dominant must watch and moderate the intensity;
  • nothing new is negotiated with someone in subspace: a yes said in that moment doesn’t count as consent to something that hadn’t been agreed;
  • after the scene, time is needed to come back: no driving, no important decisions, water and warmth;
  • in the hours or days that follow, a dip in mood may come, known as sub drop, which aftercare and getting in touch the next day help to manage.
If after a scene someone remains confused, disoriented or very low for days, don’t leave them alone. If the distress doesn’t pass, see a doctor or a professional.
