Aftercare

FundamentalsAlso known as: post-scene care, after-session care

Aftercare is the mutual care that follows a BDSM scene: warmth, water, words and attention to return calmly to normal and bring the play to a good close.

Aftercare means everything that happens right after a scene: the moment when you stop playing a role and look after each other. An intense session, whether physical or mental, leaves body and mind in a particular state, and the return to everyday life should be accompanied, not left to chance.

How it’s done

There’s no single formula: everyone has different needs, and they should be asked about during negotiation. Some gestures, though, come up often:

  • a blanket, because feeling cold or shaky after a scene is normal;
  • water, something sweet or a snack to recover energy;
  • physical contact, hugs or simply staying close, if the person wants it;
  • reassuring words and a short chat about how it went;
  • checking for marks, redness or minor discomfort left by the scene.

Some people prefer silence or a bit of space to themselves: what matters is knowing beforehand.

Why it matters

After an intense experience you may feel tiredness, euphoria or emotion, or, even hours or a day later, a sudden dip in mood known as drop. Aftercare helps you recognise these reactions and not go through them alone. It strengthens trust and turns play into a shared experience rather than a performance.

It isn’t only about the person who submits: the person who dominates may also need reassurance and to know that the other person is fine. A message the next day, asking how they are, is a small gesture that makes a big difference.

If you or your partner feel low for days after a scene, talk about it openly. If the distress doesn’t pass or persistent pain or physical symptoms appear, see a doctor or a professional you trust.
