Humiliation play

PracticesAlso known as: erotic humiliation, degradation, humiliation

Humiliation play is a psychological game in which agreed embarrassment and loss of dignity become a source of arousal for those who choose them.

Humiliation play is the game of consensual humiliation: one person agrees to be embarrassed, teased or treated dismissively, within an agreed frame and by someone they trust. It’s a mainly mental and emotional practice, which can exist without any physical contact at all.

Variations

The forms are countless and very personal. Some people love light, ironic embarrassment, such as slightly silly tasks or small rules to follow. Some prefer verbal play, some clothing, as in the sissy dynamic, some jealousy, as in cuckolding. What is arousing for one person can be a real wound for another: that’s why there is no such thing as “standard” humiliation.

Why people enjoy it

Precisely because it touches deep chords, chosen humiliation can bring a strong sense of release: for once you let go of the self-image you usually defend. For the person leading it, there’s the pleasure of psychological control and the responsibility of knowing where to stop.

Consent and safety

  • Negotiate precisely: which words, topics and situations are allowed and which are absolute limits, such as physical appearance, family or past wounds.
  • No humiliation in public that involves unsuspecting people.
  • Use a safeword and check emotional state often, because the line between play and real hurt can be thin.
  • Aftercare is essential here: reaffirming respect and affection helps separate the role from the person.

What is said in the scene stays in the scene.

If after humiliation play you’re left with a distress that doesn’t pass, talk about it and take a break. Play should make you feel better, not worse.
