Spit play

PracticesAlso known as: saliva play, spitting

Spit play is a fetish game that uses saliva as a gesture of possession or agreed humiliation: it needs careful negotiation, because opinions on it are very divided.

Spit play refers to games in which saliva becomes part of the scene. It can have an intimate, possessive meaning, as a gesture that marks belonging, or a meaning of humiliation, within a dominance dynamic in which the gesture underlines the difference in roles. It’s a very divisive practice: for some it’s arousing, for others an absolute limit.

Variations

Some people experience it tenderly, almost as an exchange between lovers, while others include it in a humiliation play scene. The meaning changes completely depending on tone and agreements, which is why it’s one of the cases where negotiation has to be especially clear.

Why people enjoy it

Saliva is something personal and normally taboo: precisely for that reason, sharing it consensually can create a strong sense of intimacy or submission. For many people the psychological side matters far more than the act itself.

Safety and consent

  • Talk about it explicitly beforehand: if unexpected, this gesture can be experienced as a real insult.
  • Agree where it’s OK and where it isn’t: for example, many people rule out the face or the eyes.
  • Saliva can transmit infections: no spit play with cold sores, a sore throat, a cold or other ongoing infections.
  • Never in the eyes.
  • As with any humiliation game, aftercare helps restore mutual respect outside the scene.

Never involve people who haven’t given their consent, not even “as a joke”.

If eye redness or signs of infection appear, see a doctor.
